Angela Y. M. Leung is currently Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing of The University of Hong Kong. She is also Associate Director of Sau Po Centre on Aging of The University of Hong Kong, the Investigator of Research Centre for Heart, Brain, Hormone and Healthy Aging of Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong, and the fellow of College of Gerontological Nursing of the Hong Kong Provisional Academy of Nursing. She earned a Bachelor of Nursing Degree from Deakin University, Australia, a Master of Health Administration from University of New South Wales, and the PhD in gerontology from the University of Hong Kong. She has extensive experience teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in gerontological nursing, health promotion and comparative health care systems.

Dr. Leung’s scholarship is dedicated to improving health literacy and older adults’ well-being through multidisciplinary team approach. She has collaborated with scholars at HKU and other universities in schools of nursing, medicine, social work, pharmacy, education, and physical exercise education. She pioneered the application of Bloom’s taxonomy in health literacy assessment and Internet-based interactive strategies in health promotion. She has published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles including Journal of Health Communication: International Perspectives, Age and Ageing, Journal of Clinical Nursing, Journal of Aging and Health.

Her research focuses on individuals’ ability to understand and interpret health information and eventually make the decisions in health service needs and health behavior. Acknowledging the uniqueness in communication and culture in Chinese population, her research team has developed instruments for measuring health literacy with Bloom’s taxonomy as the conceptual framework, and analyzed the validity of the items in each subscale with item response analysis. In addition, her team developed culturally sensitive health literacy-oriented interventions for patients with diabetes using multimedia approach by audio and pictorial stories. These developments have given researchers and practitioners new tools for implementing evidence-based care to older adults in Chinese communities.
