Professor Hor, Tzi Sum Andy 賀子森
Born & bred in Hong Kong and a naturalized Singaporean, Professor Andy Hor graduated from Imperial College (London) (B.Sc.(Hon)) and Oxford University (D.Phil.), with D.Sc.(London), specializing in orgaometallic chemistry, materials and catalysis. After his postdoctoral stint in Yale University, he started his academic career in the National University of Singapore (NUS), and became a full professor at age 44 – very rare in the 1990s'. He was among the pioneering batch of Fellows of the Teaching Academy of NUS.
In NUS, he took up different management positions such as Head of Chemistry, Vice Dean (Academic) of Science, Senior Advisory committee member of the NUS Graduate School, Science Secretariat of the "Core Curriculum" (which eventually evolved into the liberal arts education of Yale-NUS today). He is Concurrent Professor of Fudan University and Senior Fellow of the Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR). His fellowship includes Humboldt (Muenchen & Muenster), Commonwealth (Liverpool), ASAIHL (HKU & HKCU), Jackson Memorial (Griffith), Anthony Mason (New South Wales), Wilsmour (Melbourne), JSPS (Tokyo & Hokkaido) etc. He was among the earlier recipients of the National Young Scientist & Engineer award, Outstanding Educator Award and numerous teaching and research awards of NUS as well as the ASEAN (Science) Achievement award.
In 2010, He took up full-time secondment as the Executive Director of the Institute of Materials Research & Engineering (IMRE) of A*STAR of Singapore. The mission of A*STAR is to create and capture economic and social values through impactful science and innovative technologies. Within 5 years, IMRE won every major award in A*STAR, including Patent Power, Outstanding Publication, STAR Employee, Scientist-Entrepreneur, Most Inspiring Mentor, Go-the-Extra-Mile, STAR Innovation etc. In 2014, IMRE broke an institution record of ~480 publications with >16,000 citations, and >330 active patents with ~18% licensing success. In A*STAR, he understook various responsibilities such as member of the Management Committee of the Joint Council Office, Chair of the Public Service Funding grant panel, Member of the Research Ethics & Conduct Committee Ethic, Advisor of Early Career Researchers, Founding Chair of the Young Scientist Award etc. His other professional services include Board Member of the Singapore Science Centre, Chair of the national Advisory Committee of Hazardous Substances & Toxic Waste, Chair of the national working group in nanotechnology, President of Jury of the Singapore L’Oréal Women in Science Award, Member of the National Science Award panel, etc. He was active in various evaluation and advisory committees of the National Research Foundation set up under the Prime Minister’s Office.
Professor Hor is the Fellow of the Singapore National Academy of Science (SNAS), Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) (FRSC), President & Fellow of the Singapore National Institute of Chemistry (SNIC), and President of the Federation of the Asian Chemical Societies (FACS). By Aug 2015, he has published ~380 international papers, filed patents in areas like nanostructures and battery materials, and delivered numerous plenary, keynote and invited lectures in various international, regional and local meetings. He chaired the 15th Asian Chemical Congress (ACC-15) in 2013, 41st International Coordination Chemistry Conference (ICCC-41) in 2014, Golden Jubilee Chemistry Conference in Singapore in 2015, and numerous others. He is on the international/advisory board of the Chemistry – an Asian Journal (VCH-Wiley),Dalton Transactions (RSC), Inorganic Chemistry Frontiers (RSC) and Inorganica Chimica Acta (Elsevier), and Associate Editor of the Australian Journal of Chemistry (CSIRO) and Editor of the Journal of Molecular & Engineering Materials (WS).
He is married with three daughters named 賀嘉研 ("good research"), 賀惠研 ("beneficial research") & 賀芷研 ("research in nature, or natural product") that epitomise Professor Hor's belief and doctrines in research.
