AbstractThe paper presents a new technique for the simulation of power circuits. This technique allows a direct model in the discrete time domain to be derived from the simulated system. Electrical components including switching devices are modelled in a discrete manner, using the transmission-line modelling (TLM) method. The TLM algorithm provides an exact solution to the discrete model. Errors come from the modelling process only, and not from the time-stepping routine. The advantages of TLM include (i) the elimination of the requirement of repeated inversion of the system matrices due to changes in the circuit topology, (ii) its ability to handle any number of magnetically coupling terms, even with very close or perfect coupling, (iii) its stability, even for stiff networks, and (iv) an algorithm which is simple, efficient and easily programmed on desk-top computers.
