AbstractDesign of automatic control systems is a computationally intensive process. This motivates the development of accessible, easily usable and shareable interactive computing environments incorporating specialized knowledge of the theory and codified practice of automatic control. Expert or knowledge based systems can play a key role in creating such environment. Techniques of knowledge-based system can be used for the design of control systems. MEDAL is a general purpose interactive computer language for matrix computation and expert system development. The novel feature of MEDAL is that it provides an integrated environment for both numeric computation and knowledge-based system development. This paper describes the use of this novel environment for the development of knowledge-based systems for the controller design of linear control systems.
