AbstractA micromechanics model for asperity contact is proposed in the present paper. The interaction among the randomly distributed asperitites in a rough surface is taken into account via a generalized self-consistent scheme, or "three phase model". The model correlates the average pressure, p̄, to the ratio of the real contact area to the apparent contact area, Ar / A0. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional isotropic rough surface contact problems are considered by using this model.
