AbstractA series of luminescent tetranuclear cuboidal copper(I) diynyl complexes, [Cu 4(PAr 3) 4(μ 3-η 1-C≡C-C≡CR′) 4] (Ar=Ph, R′=Ph, C 6H 4CH 3-p, C 6H 4OCH 3-p; Ar=C 6H 4CH 3-p, C 6H 4F-p, R′=Ph) has been synthesized and characterized. The X-ray crystal structure of [Cu 4(PPh 3) 4(μ 3-η 1-C≡C-C≡CPh) 4] has been determined. The origin of the low-energy emission in the complexes is assigned as derived from a metal-centered 3d 94s 1 state, mixed with LMCT [diynyl→Cu 4] and IL [π-π*(diynyl)] states. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
