AbstractThe development of structure during heavy cold rolling of alpha brass is shown to be similar to that formed in a model laminar sandwich composite material. In particular the deformation of annealing twins contained in a matrix of brass is identical to the central layer of the composite. By extending this idea, the wavy shear band structure often observed in cold rolled brass is considered to be internal necking of 'blocks' of material different in mechanical properties from other blocks.
