AbstractAfter 60% cold rolling of polycrystalline α-brass, grains of orientation {110}〈001〉 and some of {110}〈112〉 deform homogeneously, while {111}〈hkl〉 and {112{〈111〉 oriented grains are twinned and contain shear bands. Some {110}〈112〉 grains show a framework of heavily deformed laminae lying parallel to 111 traces. Shear bands are stopped by homogeneously deforming grains, but in a novel cross rolling experiment in which these crystallographically soft grains are effectively removed, macroscopic shear bands are formed, which sometimes cross the entire specimen thickness.
