AbstractA three-electrolyte hybrid battery system can be used as electrochemical storage system to overcome the limitation on conventional batteries, such as large weight and short battery life (mainly due to the sulfation of negative electrode) for lead acid battery, low nominal voltage and short life cycles for high current discharge for nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery [1-2]. This hybrid battery consists of a lead acid positive electrode (PbO2/PbSO4) and a metal hydride negative electrode (MHx/MHx-1), operating in H2SO4 aqueous solution and KOH aqueous solution, respectively via a pair of cation-exchange membrane and anion-exchange membrane separated by the neutral K2SO4 aqueous electrolyte (Fig. 1). The hybrid system has a stable operating voltage with repeated charge/discharge cycles. The operating voltage and power of the system can be increased by as much as …
