AbstractGambling problems in Hong Kong are examined and, in particular, the conceptual and cultural issues raised by the terms 'problem gambling' and 'compulsive gambling' amongst the Chinese. A questionnaire (in Chinese) was developed for quantifying gambling activities for people in Hong Kong. The questionnaire is intended for screening gamblers at risk of becoming problem or compulsive gamblers. The questions address: (a) the first gambling episode; (b) the current pattern of gambling; (c) the current attitude towards gambling; (d) personal insight and self-awareness; and (e) social support. Preliminary data analysis suggests that two variables, attitude towards gambling and distorted thinking, are good predictors for future problematic gambling patterns. Some methodological issues relating to validation are also highlighted.
