AbstractObjective To compare the studies on event related potentials(ERP) evoked by single visual, auditory and somatosensory target stimulus modes, and discuss the possibility of electrical stimulated somatosensory using in brain computer interface(BCI) system as the new method and provide theoretical basis for BCI based on somatosensory ERP. Methods A total of 17 volunteers with normal vision or corrected visual acuity and normal hearing and somatosensory function without any brain history were enrolled, included 8 males and 9 females, aged 20-26 years old with mean age of 22.6 years old,and all of them were right-handed. The electroencephalograph of volunteers evoked by uni-modal target stimuli of visual, auditory and somatosensory was recorded, respectively. The time parameters(amplitudes and latencies) of ERP,behavioral(reaction time and error rate) and dipole source locations of 3 stimulus modes were analyzed and compared. Results The ERP waveforms of 3stimulus modes were similar, the ERP amplitudes of somatosensory, visual and auditory stimulus modes were no significantly correlated, and ERP latencies of somatosensory stimuli were significantly longer than that of visual stimuli. The action time of somatosensory stimuli were significantly longer than that of visual stimuli, and error rates were also higher than both visual and auditory stimulus pattern. The dipole source locations under single somatosensory and visual stimulus mode were similar. Conclusion It is demonstrated that human brain is more difficult than visual and auditory uni-modal stimuli in detecting and perceiving electrical stimulated somatosensory, but electrical stimulus could evoke stable somatosensory ERP waveforms, which could become the new stimuli mode for BCI application.
