AbstractThe purpose of this study is to review the underground structure in Hong Kong, the seismicity of the Hong Kong region and the effect of earthquake and the specific response of underground structure to earthquake. Simplified method for estimation of seismic loading is studied. By the procedures, seismic hazard assessment is done and the design earthquake is selected. After evaluation of the free field peak shear strain in the soil and the elastic stiffness of the structure, the racking deformations of the structure are found. Finally the member forces in the structure from the racking deformation are estimated. The Flexibility Ratio, F and the Shear Strain Deformation ratio, R are used to identify the relationship between the input parameter and the effect on structural deformation under earthquake load.
