AbstractThe chapter discusses the prerequisites and preparations required of a Samatha meditator who intends to achieve and experience high states of mind by examining relevant Abhidhammic expositions ncluded in the Visuddhimagga, a classic meditation manual of the Theravada Buddhist tradition, composed in the fifth century A.D., in Sri Lanka. It discusses also concentration, impediments for meditation, meditation subjects, personality types, and the progressive stages of practice.
