AbstractThe Reformer China was a newspaper founded in Macau by the Reformists in 1897. It lasted for four years and around 134 issues had been published before it closed in 1901. Its aims accorded with those of The Chinese Progress in Shanghai, mainly to save China by launching reforms and disseminating new knowledge to the public. The newspaper placed much emphasis on translating and reporting foreign news, particularly those on science and technology. It also engaged itself in the promotion of “Anti-Footbinding” and “Quit Opium-smoking” campaigns in China. The main purposes of these movements were to discard undesirable customs and strengthen the country as a whole. After the 1898 coup d’etat,Kang Youwei (1858-1927) and Liang Qichao (1873-1929) fled aboard and founded the Chinese Empire Reform Association. The China Discussion in Yokohama and The Reformer China in Macau became their propaganda agencies. The thoughts for reforms of the association were rooted in Confucianism. They advocated the Confucian teaching of “respecting the emperor” and Kang’s ideal to regenerate Confucianism; all these were well reflected in The Reformer China. This paper aims to examine the course of change and the development of The Reformer China before and after the Hundred Days Reform Movement. It will also discuss the relations of The Reformer China to the Southeast Asian Confucian Revival Movement and the development of Chinese culture in the late Qing period.
