AbstractWe report three cases of malignant salivary gland tumours that were referred to our institution for further management, in which the initial management was suboptimal. These cases serve to illustrate common pitfalls in the management of salivary gland neoplasms. Relevant literature was reviewed. We recommend that all salivary gland neoplasms should be managed with an oncological intent; complete excision with a margin of normal tissue. The recommended minimum surgery for parotid tumours is a superficial parotidectomy with dissection of the facial nerve. The recommended minimum surgery for submandibular tumours is an extracapsular submandibulectomy.
