Concomitant occurrence of hypodontia andsupernumerary teeth in two children

Abstract

Concomitant occurrence of the anomalies, hypodontia andhyperdontia, is a condition of mixed numerical variation of thehuman dentition and its occurrence is exceedingly rare at 8 to 15per 10 000. We report two children both of whom did not have afamily history of hypodontia, hyperdontia or impacted teeth. Case1 was a 10 -year-old Chinese girl in her late mixed dentition. Theradiographic examination of the dentition revealed missing per-manent mandibular lateral incisors and a supernumerary tooth inthe maxillary canine region on the left side. The maxillarypermanent left canine was impacted with the crown pointingtowards the root of the upper left central incisor. The clinicalfindings of Case 2, a 6 -year-old Chinese boy in his primarydentition, revealed a pair of missing mandibular primary incisors,in combination with a supernumerary tooth in the maxillary incisorregion. In addition, the radiographic examination revealed amissing permanent mandibular incisor tooth germ. The occurrenceof supernumerary teeth in the maxillary canine and maxillaryincisor region is uncommon, and when present in combination withhypodontia, as occurred in these children, is extremely rare. Thesecases highlight the importance of the routine use of panoramicradiographs for children to facilitate the early detection of this rarecombination of dental anomalies.
