Professor Tang, Wai King Grace 鄧惠瓊
Professor Grace Tang is a graduand of the University of Hong Kong.
Her accomplishments in the academic profession and beyond are numerous. As Dean of Medicine (1998-2001) of the University of Hong Kong, she facilitated effective implementation of the New Medical Curriculum with her passionate and famous motto "Failure is not an option". She is the Founding Chairman of the Asian Medical Education Association (AMEA) since 2001.
As President of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (2005-2008), she has made meaningful progress towards achieving CPD (continuous professional development) for specialists. During her tenure as President of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, she has been appointed as a principal member of the Preparatory Committee of Specialist Registration of the Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China.
As Chairman of the Education and Accreditation Committee of the Medical Council of Hong Kong (from 2001), she has launched the “CME program for doctors who are not taking CME for specialists” program, and devised the “CME certified” title for the non-specialists who have completed a 3-year CME program.
Her energy and commitment to the well being of society at large is evidenced by her active membership/chairmanship/leadership in many diverse organizations in Hong Kong, including the Family Planning Association, Supplementary Medical Professions Council, Women’s Commission, Social Workers Registration Board, Veterinary Surgeons Board, and Human Reproduction Technology Council.
In recognition of her outstanding contributions she has been bestowed honorary fellowships of various institutions including those from Singapore, Ireland, United States, Australia and Malaysia. She has been recipient of the Young Scientist Award of Asia-Oceanic Federation of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in 1991 and Outstanding Women Professionals and Entrepreneurs Award in 2005. In 2009, she was awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star (SBS) by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administration Region.
Her research related to women’s health is the first in Hong Kong on a number of areas, including the studies of menarche and congenital abnormality of the genital organ, psychosomatic medicine, longitudinal study of menopausal symptoms, bone mineral density and bone loss in Chinese women, Chinese medicine in the treatment of menopausal women, and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in the prevention of precancerous lesions of the cervix and the vulva.
From November 2011, she is seconded to the HKU-Shenzhen Hospital to serve as its Founding Hospital Chief Executive to build a pilot hospital in PRC for healthcare reform, as well as a world class hospital in clinical service, teaching and research.
