Dr. Kwan is a social scientist with academic training in psychology. After studying at the University of Hong Kong for a year, she received her PhD, MS and BA degrees in psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the US. She then worked as Academic Specialist at the University of California- San Francisco and was involved in NIH-funded community-based studies related to family and cultural aspects of diabetes management in Chinese populations. Subsequently, in the Asia Diabetes Foundation in Hong Kong, she managed a diabetes quality improvement program that was implemented in multiple countries in Asia. Dr. Kwan’s research is multidisciplinary and focuses on understanding the roles of psychological, social and cultural factors in mental and physical health in the face of challenges, such as chronic diseases, economic hardship and significant life events, in adulthood and later life. Dr. Kwan actively publishes in peer-reviewed journals and participates in community work. She is a member of the American Psychological Association.
