Dr Ng, Simon Tat Ming 吳達明
Simon’s academic interests include legal theories, constitutional jurisprudence, cultural studies of law, disability equality and inclusive education. His doctoral thesis is a jurisprudential analysis of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal’s decisions in the Ng Ka Ling series of cases (right of abode) in the historical, political and social context, based on Ronald Dworkin’s rights thesis and moral reading of the constitution. He is recipient of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Young Scholars Thesis Award 2017, for the outstanding standard of the dissertation. Besides, he has written and lectured on disability issues and equal education rights of disabled/ SEN students.
Simon takes active part in the promotion of disability equality and inclusion. He has been working with a group of global experts, researching, teaching and advocating disability rights and equality. In HKU SPACE, he initiated the Workshop on Disability Rights and Equality in 2015, which is a training course aiming to empower self-advocates, third-party advocates, civil societies and others working on the disability cause, based on the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. With the support and involvement of colleagues from the Harvard Law School Project on Disability (HPOD), Leeds University Centre for Disability Studies and other institutions, the Workshop has successfully run for three times since its inaugural launch. Simon has worked closely with the HPOD on capacity-building training for local disability communities in China and Taiwan, and colleagues in Leeds on other fronts. He holds a development grant (2017-18) funded by the University of London Undergraduate Laws programme for a project on accommodating blind students to pursue the prestigious LL.B. degree externally via HKU SPACE.
Simon serves on the Editorial Executive of the International Journal of Disability and Social Justice as Book Reviews Editor. He is also an Honorary Research Associate with the Centre for Advancement in Inclusive and Special Education, HKU Faculty of Education.
