Abstract | In early 2018, Shenzhen Municipal Planning & Natural Resources Bureau, Futian Branch launched “Futian New Campus Action Plan: 8+1 Joint Architecture Exhibition.” The campaign aimed to search for innovative approaches to the design of high-quality/density schools for Shenzhen, a city with limited land resources. This essay reviews the 37 design schemes emerging from or related to the “Architecture Exhibition,” and summarizes the wide range of architectural explorations made, under the severe limitations, especially those imposed by the strict school building codes. The study pays close attention to seven issues: the layout of sports field, the limit of building levels & height, the interaction between space & education, the spatial organization of campus, the buildings’ physical performance, the resource-sharing between the school & community, and the site characteristics in relation to campus diversity. The essay examines particularly how architects attempted to make design innovations through flexible interpretation, rather than direct violation, of the current school design guidelines and building codes. Based on case studies, the author argues that in order to support the coming high-density school construction boom in Shenzhen, innovations should be made on many stages throughout the school production process, from project programming & approval, design guidelines revision, design & design approval, all the way to school management. |
