AbstractWe consider the 2D surface quasi-geostrophic equation with fractional dissipation on . We obtain local and global results for plane wave type initial conditions. In some cases an explicit series expansion is constructed which represents the solution as a sum of delta functions in the Fourier space. © 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd and London Mathematical Society.
