The Hongwu shengzheng ji 洪武聖政記, compiled by the scholar-official Song Lian 宋濂 (1310-1381) and his subordinates in 1375, is not only the solitary "records of virtuous policies" approved by Emperor Taizu 太祖 (1328—1398, r. (1368—1398), but also the first contemporary history of the Ming 明 dynasty (1368—1644). Yet, despite its historical value, there is to date no dedicated study on it. The present article aims to fill in this gap by examining the book's origin, course of compilation and circulation, as well as the number of volumes, the organization and the contents of this significant source. |
