Objectives
A virtual reality-empowered training system is developed for the training of China Aircraft Services Limited (CASL) engineers to perform walk-around inspection of aircraft which is a critical aircraft maintenance operation undertaken by CASL. The virtual reality (VR) training system is based on the technology of interactive and immersive VR training paradigm powered by the imseCAVE VR solutions together with the VR training management methodology in the domain of aviation service logistics resulting from the parent ITF project – A virtual reality system for strategic operation training (ITP/015/15LP) undertaken by the project team at HKU. The VR-empowered training system for aircraft maintenance operation training not only greatly enhances the availability and flexibility of the training process, but also improves the safety of personnel performing such training. Moreover, the innovative training management system developed allows the capturing of trainees behavior during the training process, which facilitate the qualification of trainee skills with enhanced flexibility, minimizing risk of damaging valuable hardware, and improved cost effectiveness of training programme.
