Objectives
In summary, the proposed project aims to help the government to obtain a precise assessment of the plastic pollution in Hong Kong in order to develop strategic measures in terms of waste management to limit and control the impact of plastic on the marine environment (priority recycling of certain type of plastic, limit the usage of specific plastic type etc.). The project will: • Monitor the temporal variability of plastic pollution in Hong Kong for one year. • Identification of microplastics types (pellet, polystyrene, film, fibre and hard fragment) and composition (PE, PP, EPS, PS etc.) found in Hong Kong beaches and nearshore waters. • Assess the potential plastic sources (local vs transported) via comparison of the plastic composition of both macroplastics and microplastics. • Evaluate the environmental parameters (wind, rain, surface currents) responsible for the transport of plastic debris in the coastal environment.
