Objectives
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an important cause of hepatitis. Human-infecting HEV variants were considered to belong exclusively to species A (HEV-A). We discovered that HEV species C (HEV-C; rat hepatitis E) also causes human infection. Both cause chronic infections in immunocompromised persons. We will characterize monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against both variants and deploy mAbs for a) a pan-HEV antigen immunoassay for differentiating HEV-A and HEV-C in patient sera and b) mAb cocktails for treatment of chronic hepatitis E.
