Objectives
(a) To collect and collate linguistic data, in the form of a computerised corpus of Asian English newspaper texts which will be accessile for linguistic research. The potential applications of linguistic research on such a corpus relate to issues of vocabulary (lexis), grammar (syntax), and discourse (text analysis). In this study, the initial investigation will focus primarily on vocabulary and grammar, with special reference to those features of language that are of most relevance to a description of various 'styles' and 'standards' of Asian English; (b) the provision of a computerised database of English in Asia that is available to academics, researchers, graduate students, educationalists, and professional journalists; (c) to collect and collate essential sociological information relarting to the spread of English in the Asian region (South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East (Asia) with specific reference to English-language news media in the Asian region; and (d) to further promote Hong Kong as a key academic centre for regional and international research on the study of Asian English(es).
