Professor Zhang, Nan 張楠
Nan Zhang holds a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in the U.S. Her research interests include global modernism, late nineteenth- and twentieth-century literature and culture, ethics and literature, intellectual history, and aesthetic theory. Her current book project, “Solemn Progress”: Modernism, Social Constitution, and Cosmic Life, examines how a group of modernist writers including Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, Rabindranath Tagore, Thomas Mann, and Lin Yutang engaged with various forms of civic virtue in a global context.

Nan Zhang received her B. A. in International Finance from Fudan University, and her Ph.D. in English Literature from Johns Hopkins University. She was a recipient of the 2020 Humanities Research Centre Fellowship at Australian National University and British Academy Seed Funding in 2019. She works on nineteenth- and early twentieth-century British literature and global modernism. Her research interests also include cosmopolitan studies, history of political thought, aesthetics and ethics, and economics. She is completing a book exploring modernist writers’ engagement with various forms of civic virtue in a global context. Her new book project focuses on transmutations of British liberalism at the turn of the twentieth century. She is at the moment co-editing a special issue for Modernist Cultures on cities of global modernism.
Nan Zhang is co-editor of the "Global Circulation Project (GCP)” at Literature Compass and serves on the editorial board of the Bloomsbury Academic books series “Historicizing Modernism.” She is a co-founder and currently chair of the Modernist Studies in Asia network (MSIA) (https://www.modernismasia.hku.hk/).
