| Abstract | OpenW is an open online academic index. This paper aims to illustrate the differences between an open index and a closed index and some unique functions that an open index may serve. The basic features of an open index will be discussed and we suggest that the key to an open index is to establish an interested community. In order to maintain such a community, an open index will need to evolve from a web directory site to become also a community website. We conclude by looking at the difficulties and challenges in building an open index. |
