AbstractDepression literally in English means ‘depressed mood’. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the diagnosis ‘stagnation syndrome’ has been used for about 2000 years. When Western medicine came to China, the word ‘depression’ was translated into Chinese with reference to the TCM term ‘stagnation syndrome’. Our clinical experience suggests that the concept of ‘stagnation’ is more central to depression. Depressed mood is a consequence. Now we are trying to use the concept of ‘stagnation’ to build a new clinical model for depression, and trying to examine in some clinical trials. Scales and treatment manual are under development.
