Abstract | The article discusses moral and ethical aspects of cinematography in the modern nation-state of China. Chinese films that depict atrocities during China's Cultural Revolution and influence the collective memory are discussed. The digital-video documentary's role in modernity as a moral authority that exposes oppression and death is also discussed. Nationalist historiography in the film 'China on Screen: Cinema and Nation' is mentioned. The conflict between state control and media market forces in China is noted. |
