AbstractAt the 2010 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) meeting in Stockholm, Sweden, new European guidelines on the management of atrial fi brillation (AF) were published. 1 These guidelines represent a departure from the previous European and American guidelines published in 2006, which the ESC formulated conjointly with the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association. Do the changes in the new ESC guidelines represent an evolution in practice based on substantial advances in AF management since 2006, or are these guidelines a revolution that deliberately cuts a new path?
