Abstract | This case presentation demonstrates the 2 phase treatment of a 13 years 11months old Chinese boy with a Class II skeletal base with convex facial profile due toretrusive mandible and chin, using the fixed functional appliance and fixed applianceapproach. The functional appliance treatment of 1 year has demonstrated an improvementin the patient’s facial profile and aesthetics which had addressed the patient’s underlyingproblem. This was followed by the fixed appliance treatment with the extractions ofpremolars to address the dental problem. The overall results has demonstrated the benefitof using functional appliances in improving facial profile in certain cases in a growing childthat could be an option in the treatment of skeletal Class II cases. This case alsodemonstrated the management of the impacted upper second molars which was exposedusing the laser. This case was one of the long cases presented at the Part II of theMembership of Orthodontics examination held by the Royal College of Surgeons ofEdinburgh and the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong in November 2009 and a Goldmedal with full marks was awarded in the overall performance in the examination.
