AbstractNumerous studies attest to the reliability and safety of Tru-cut® needle biopsy of thyroid nodules. We describe a simple method in which the biopsy needle may be controlled with one hand, thereby freeing the other hand to fix the thyroid nodule in position. Attention to the site of needle entry and the trajectory of the biopsy plane will minimize complications while ensuring a satisfactory yield in approximately 90% of nodules, irrespective of their location within the thyroid gland. Obtaining multiple biopsies along different planes will further reduce geographical sampling errors. It is suggested that this easily adopted method should complement fine-needle aspiration in the management of dominant thyroid nodules. © 1984 Société Internationale de Chirurgie.
