AbstractA microcomputer-based index filing system in a histopathology department is described. The system provides a means of rapid data storage and retrieval. The Systematized Nomenclature of Pathology (SNOP) is used to code for diagnoses. Essential information of past records within two years that is stored on the hard disk can be readily retrieved for reference whenever specimens from the same patients are received. The accession numbers of such past records beyond two years can also be retrieved. The system can be used for surgical audit and also for patient follow-up.
