Abstract | The human body is a net-producer of acids. Both intracellular and extracellular proton concentrations are physiologically tightly regulated because many important steps in intermediary metabolism, including ATP synthesis, are pH dependent. This chemical pathology case conference on acid-base disturbance will provide basic knowledge to interpret disturbances in acid-base homeostasis in clinical practice. This will be achieved by (1) a brief review of basic concepts, (2) an introduction of laboratory investigations used to diagnose acid-base disturbances, and (3) the analysis of clinical examples of disturbances in acid-base homeostasis. |
