Abstract | Iron is an essential element to our body, participating in many metabolic functions. Both iron deficiency and overloading can lead to severe clinical consequences. The body iron status can be measured using haematological and biochemical indices. In this paper, we discuss the clinical usefulness and limitations of the common biochemical markers relating to iron metabolism, namely serum iron, serum ferritin, total iron binding capacity, the derived transferrin saturation percentage and a more recently introduced parameter, soluble transferrin receptor. Common misconceptions regarding the interpretation of these markers would be highlighted. |
