AbstractThe potential of applying the reverse osmosis process for removing inorganic compounds from wastewater was studied extensively. Performance of the new membrane materials in a number of module configurations constituted the major purpose of this study. Physico-chemical criteria of reverse osmosis separation of inorganic compounds were established based upon extensive experimental studies on five different types of membrane materials with a large number of inorganics. Because of problems encountered with membrane fouling and deterioration, a pretreatment scheme was proposed prior to the reverse osmosis removal of inorganics.
