AbstractThe micromechanical basis of non-linear phenomenological equations as damage evolution laws was investigated. The damage evolution laws, a part of continuum damage mechanics, were assumed to be derived from a scalar damage dissipation potential in phenomenological damage models. The general conditions leading to the non-linear phenomenological equations were examined within the framework of a thermodynamic theory of irreversible processes with internal variables.
