AbstractDirect shear apparatus (DSA) has been widely used in the world for testing soil shear strength in geotechnical engineering. This paper illustrates the research work on configuration of DSA and its development at present. Then, a new large direct shear apparatus is analyzed in detail from its configuration, shear mechanism and characteristics. Compared with the conventional DSA, the new large DSA has more advantages and it can be used in field and laboratory test with accurate results.
