AbstractThe value of pictorial criteria for the self-assessment of restorative procedures on primary teeth was evaluated. Part-time clinical teachers and dental students showed improvements in their assessment of restorative procedures when using pictorial criteria. This form of self-assessment in clinical dentistry can be expected to provide the operators with a feedback mechanism which is both evaluative and informative. It indicates whether the response is acceptable or not, and why this is the case. Use of this pictorial form of self-assessment also encourages clinicians to assess their own work critically, thereby raising operative standards. © 1987.
