AbstractSynthetic hydroxyapatite (HA) particles were incorporated into a high density polyethylene to produce composites for medical applications. Composites with HA volume fractions from 10 to 50% were produced by a manufacturing process which consisted of blending, compounding, powder preparation, and compression moulding. Characterization of the starting materials included particle size analysis and morphological examination. The dispersion and distribution of ceramic particles in the polymer matrix were investigated at different stages of composite processing. Specimens made from compression moulded plates were tensile tested and their fracture surfaces and microstructures studied by scanning electron microscopy.
