AbstractHAPEX(TM), a composite consisting of particulate hydroxyapatite and high density polyethylene, has been implanted in animal models and on clinical trials to assess its biocompatibility, bioactivity, and suitability for use in otologic applications. In this paper, the philosophy of engineering this material for tissue replacement is outlined, various properties of the material is reviewed attesting to its appropriateness as an otologic biomaterial, different designs of HAPEX(TM) middle ear implants are introduced, and some preliminary clinical results are presented.
