Abstract | The issue of the success of knowledge-based system development in construction is raised in this paper and examples of Japanese, U.K. and U.S. experience are cited. A taxonomy of domain types is presented as a framework within which to discuss the complexity of the systems under development. Research aims and development approaches in the field are reviewed and comments made on their impact on success. This is followed by a discussion of the development process and the need for improvements in development methodologies. A brief review of the nature of construction industry response to knowledge-based systems is then followed by a description of two projects under development in Hong Kong. The paper concludes with some thoughts on future development initiatives. © 1991. |
