AbstractAromatic polyamides were synthesized by direct condensation between 2,2′-bipyridine-5,5′-dicarboxylic acid and various aromatic diamines using pyridine and triphenylphosphite as the condensing reagents. It was found that HPMA with 4% LiCl was the best solvent system for the polymerization reaction. Polymerization in other polar aprotic solvents failed to give high molecular polymers: the oligomers precipitated out from the reaction mixture.
