Abstract | A successful method for containing the corrosive lithium metal used for anodes in high-temperature batteries, is to alloy it with aluminum. The authors have therefore conducted a detailed cyclic chronopotentiometric study of the formation of Li/Al anodes from pure aluminum and their consequent discharge. This technique has the advantage that the current-time profile during the short time scale employed resembles that observed during actual battery operation and, in addition, overcharging and overdischarging of the Li/Al anodes which inevitably takes place in batteries of cells, can be studied under well controlled conditions. |
