AbstractThis was a study of the effect of three agents (phenformin, pyridinolcarbamate combined with a decalcifying agent, and an onion-garlic mixture) on development of atherosclerosis in the abdominal aortas of young swine over a 6-month period. These agents were selected because of their theoretical or reported interference with atherogenesis in animal models. The swine were subjected to balloon endothelial cell denudation of the abdominal aorta at the outset followed by a hyperlipidemic diet. None of the agents showed any beneficial effect on the process as compared to untreated swine subjected to the same regimen.
