AbstractElectronic portfolios (e‐portfolios) have been more commonly used in disciplines such as architecture and design as a means for students to build up a body of work. Literature suggests that e‐portfolios can improve communication concerning the expectations that lecturers have of their students whilst also improving feedback and promoting reflective thinking on the part of students (Emmett, Harper, & Hauville, 2005; Howatson‐Jones, 2004). This study investigates the use of an e‐portfolio when it was introduced into one undergraduate nursing course. A descriptive survey was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of an eportfolio in maintaining students’ clinical placement documents and for lecturers to support students on their placements. Students’ and lecturers’ perceptions of the e‐portfolio were also explored using a qualitative approach. The sample comprised of 69 third year students enrolled in a Bachelor of Nursing degree and 14 lecturers. The survey revealed that having a single repository to maintain clinical documentation that could be reviewed remotely was an effective means of enhancing communication between lecturers and students as it aided the provision of timely feedback. It also revealed modifications of the e‐portfolio design were needed, and that further preparation of students and lecturers prior to using the e‐portfolio was indicated. Overall the study showed enough benefits to warrant continuation of the e‐portfolio during clinical placements.
