Community : a framework for landscape design

Abstract

In order to transform spaces into places, the landscape architect must be able to identify potential community needs and design in response to those aspirations and desires. Whether the site is a large residential estate, a streetscape, or a neighbourhood park, enabling people to take ownership, develop and invest in their local places needs to be an integral part of the design and community engagement process. Furthermore, community needs change over time, requiring designs to be adaptable, flexible, multifunctional, environmentally sensitive and life-cycle cost effective in order to be sustainable in the long-term.
