Abstract | Cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) is frequently found in patients with vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Microinfarcts are hallmarks of SVD, and their gradual accumulation in the brain is strongly correlated with cognitive impairment. Microinfarcts may be useful biomarkers for early detection of cognitive decline. The objective of this study is to investigate spatiotemporal changes in MRI signals associated with murine microinfarcts using DKI. Our preliminary results indicate that microinfarcts are only visible over a short duration (3 days) after vascular occlusion. Methods to prolong and enhance the visibility of microinfarcts will be useful to improve detection in humans. |
