Discussing 'Yi Zhi Wei Shu'

Abstract

“Yi Zhi Wei Shu（以知為數）” is the principle of treating musculature zone diseases. There have been different interpretations. “Rectification of Miraculous Pivot, Hebei medical College” gives the following explanation. “Zhi, (知)” means the recognition of therapeutic efffect or curing . “Shu,( 數)” means the limit of the frequency of needling. “Yi Zhi Wei Shu（以知為數）”gives the meaning that the limit of the frequency of needling should according to the recognition of therapeutic efffect or curing. Xu”s gives another point of view. “Zhi, (知)”means needling sensation. “Shu,( 數)” means the laws, rules, regulations or standards. “Yi Zhi Wei Shu（以知為數）”gives another meaning, reaching the needling sensation comply the standard. From my point of view, “Zhi, (知)” means perception. Under the scriptures, it is also a kind of perception knowing the therapeutic effect. “Shu,( 數)” means quick. “Yi Zhi Wei Shu（以知為數）”should be read like this. In musculature zone disease using special methods “Fan Zhen Jie Ci,( 燔針劫刺)“ in the principle of “ the pain site as the acu-point,( 以痛為輸)” results “relieving in first, improving in second, curing in third” , such kind of the quick observable therapeutic effect. This interpretation should be more likely sticking on the original meaning in the paragraph of musculature zone, Miraculous Pivot. Here comes with a hint. In clinical practices, it is a must to differentiate the disease between musculature zones or meridians and collaterals. Each condition comes with its own respective solution. Mismatching cannot result a desirable quick observable therapeutic effect. Reading the scriptures in the correct way can give a critical mind in clinical practice.
